Historical romance - the author’s list

Historical romance is a category of fiction in which the plot takes place in a setting located in the past. The genre was popularized by Walter Scott with his novels Rob Roy and Ivanhoe. It is also a genre of mass-market fiction, which is related to the broader romantic love genre. But with other genres becoming popular, historical fiction is getting set-back. Though its popularity is considerably lesser, the genre hasn’t completely died out, and here is a list of the most-loved and most-popular authors of the genre:

  • Jane Austen
Jane Austen was an English novelist whose novels critique and comment upon the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century.
  • Julia Quinn
Julia Quinn is the pseudonym used by Julie Pottinger, a New York Times bestselling author, who has won the hearts of her readers from her very first novel.
  • Kathleen E. Woodiwiss
Kathleen was an American writer. She pioneered the historical romance genre with the 1972 publication of her novel The Flame and the Flower.
  • Eloisa James
Eloisa James is the pen name of Mary Bly, a tenured professor of English Literature at Fordham University who also writes best-selling Regency and Georgian romance novels under her pen name. She is the daughter of poet Robert Bly and short-story author Carol Bly.
